The 2005 Coffs Harbour Master Pairs was played at the Coffs Harbour Ex Services Bowling Club from Monday 4th July to Thursday 7th July 2005 and again attracted a great field of high profile players, including many of the young brigade, to battle it out for the $16,800 prize money.
The field this year was well balanced with entries from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland to take on the local and Mid North Coast teams.
Given the fact that only four days before the start of the tournament Coffs Harbour had recorded some 250mm of rain. Even so the greens were in perfect condition and ran at 16 seconds on all four days of play, thanks to the greens staff for their hard work.
Queenslanders Jeff Aworth (Springwood) and Jeff Dolan (Wynnum Manly) took out the title with a resounding win over Phil Harrison and Eric Johannes (Warilla ) 24-8. Despite the score the quality of bowls played was outstanding from both teams with little going for the Warilla boys after their grueling Semi Final 21-15 win in the morning over Col Baldwin and Bruce Anderson (Westport) which took over four hours to play due to numerous dead ends from both teams.
Such a long drawn out game certainly took its toll on both Phil and Eric and they conceded the final after 16 ends.
You could say it was a Queenslanders revenge against New South Wales State of Origin win the previous night Aworth and Dolan were in top form throughout the tournament winning their section with 4 wins plus 26 shots.
They won their Quarter Final against Geoff McGillivray and Rocky Stone (Warilla) 23-15 in an action packed game.
They then had a really tough Semi Final against locals Wayne Rowbottom and Col Pritchard (Park Beach) winning 14-13 after having to play an extra end.
Harrison and Johannes won their section with 4 wins plus 13 shots then went o to defeat Jim Swan (Park Beach) and Noel Waite (Windale Gateshead) 19-11 in the Quarter Final then took out Col Baldwin and Bruce Anderson (Westport) 21-15 in the Semi Final.
Previous title winners Kent Price and Dallas Cole (Coffs Ex Services) were well placed with 5 wins plus 48 shots up but were defeated in the Quarter Final by Port Macquarie Westport team of Col Baldwin and Bruce Anderson 17-16 in a hard fought game.
John O'Neill (Port City) and John Snell (Lakes Entrance Vic.) won their section with a 5 wins plus 59 shots but were unable to continue that form going down to Wayne Rowbottom and Col Pritchard 22-17 in the Quarter Finals.
Last years winners Richard Girvan and Wayne Turley (Taren Point) played well throughout the tournament but were unable to win their section with 3 wins and a draw plus 13 shots with the eventual winners Aworth and Dolan in that section.
In the defeated semi-finalists play off for 5th , 6th, 7th and 8th places Geoff McGillivray and Rocky Stone (Warilla) defeated John O'Neill (Port City) and John Snell (Lakes Entrance) 19-14 - Jim Swan (Park Beach) and Noel Waite (Windale Gateshead) defeated Kent Price and Dallas Cole (Coffs Ex Services) 16 - 14 Section winners of the Masters event were:
