The Coffs Harbour Ex Services Master Pairs saw the assembly of twenty four thoroughbred lawn bowling teams, who locked horns for the $22,000.00 prize money on offer at this year’s annual event. Forecasting the winners of this tournament would resemble similar odds to picking them six lucky numbers, we all hope for, on a Saturday night, such was the quality and symmetry of the field.

Members and spectators surrounding the greens were witness to some spectacular lawn bowls throughout the five game sectional rounds, which saw only Anthony Gillman & Chris Ryan (Greenslopes) and Richard Girvan & Wayne Turley (Taren Point) progress through all rounds, without suffering a loss.
With only two teams in each of the four sections progressing to the Quarter Finals it was always going to be a sprint to the finish for those teams that wished to be around on the final day, in hope of being crowned the 2008 CEX Master Pairs champions.

Local favorites Kent Price & Dallas Cole made their intentions obvious from day one with two strong wins, and memories of former Masters victories came flooding back as both home town boys looked in fine touch. Perennial winner Steve Glasson and team mate Kevin Tresize (St John’s Park) had been slow out of the blocks for the majority of the week, giving most opposition teams a generous start, but had succeeded with four wins, winning their section, due to finishes normally performed by the likes of Phar Lap.

Last years championship winners, Tom Ellem & Shane Garvey (Towradgi / Engadine), were in line to re-write the history books of the event, by becoming the first team to win in consecutive years and after a strong performance throughout the sectional play, they would prove be a force to be reckoned with during the final series.

Thursday morning bought fine, cool weather and red hot bowls, with Richard Girvan / Wayne Turley engaged in battle against the experienced Peter Bellis accompanied by the talented Ryan Bester, and with much on the line and a place in the lucrative final to play for, neither team were asking nor giving an inch as we seen the scoreboard locked at 18 all, going into the last end. In a “Hitchcock” ending, Girvan / Turley held game with only one bowl to play, and a silence could be heard as Bester line up to released another thunderbolt which narrowly missed the target enabling the Taren Point duo secure the win 19 / 18.

In an action packed morning of bowls, the other Semi Final was another “Main Event” with the Raymond Terrace combo of David Brandt & Jason Stokes taking on the highly fancied champion team of last year in Tom Ellem & Shane Garvey. All four players displayed another high standard classical game of lawn bowls, with very little separating either team for the duration of the match and when Stokes drew the absolute with his last bowl to hold game, the former champs destiny would rely on the ability of the brilliant Garvey, who sealed the deal, and the Terrace Boys feat, with another great pressure shot,
winning their way to the Final  18 / 16.

After the lunch break spectators jockeyed for position around the green, in search for the best possible vantage point, in what promised to be a wonderful bowls spectacle, but as we have all learned from past experiences, some things just never go to plan.
From the very onset of the Final both Girvan and Turley were in relentless form and after just seven ends had accumulated a healthy eleven shot led, this would prove to be an unassailable margin and the hoodoo of any team winning the CEX Master Pairs in consecutive years would stand for a further twelve months.
